Annual Report 2015-2016

We are pleased to share some of Baycrest’s recent achievements

Welcome to our Annual Report

Dr. William Reichman - President & CEO, Baycrest Health Sciences, Garry Foster - President & CEO, Baycrest Foundation It is an exciting time of change and innovation at Baycrest Health Sciences. Our mission to provide outstanding care, make an impact on brain health and offer first-rate educational opportunities increasingly extends beyond the borders of our 23-acre campus, the Greater Toronto Area and Canada. We are proud that Accreditation Canada, which sets standards for quality and safety in health care, awarded its highest performance rating to Baycrest – exemplary standing – after reviewing more than 1,500 criteria related to accessibility, care and other service elements. Every day, we hear from clients who are grateful for our holistic approach that not only takes care of their medical needs, but also includes activities and programs designed to engage and help them age well. Our Rotman Research Institute has long been ranked among the top research centres in the world in memory and cognitive neuroscience. This past year, an external review team praised its highly collaborative and collegial environment, and noted that the high degree of interaction and engagement among groups has resulted in important and exciting new research programs. Building on our successes, Baycrest led the way in establishing the Canadian Centre for Aging and Brain Health Innovation (CC-ABHI), an international hub for a network of seniors’ care and health organizations dedicated to the development, validation, commercialization, dissemination and adoption of brain health and seniors’ care products and services. Improving brain health for people at every age is a key component in our overall mission. Messages on how to reduce the risk of brain disease are conveyed not only in the media and medical journals, but also by engaging the community through inspirational events like The Brain Project presented by Telus, Game Night, the Scotiabank Pro-Am for Alzheimer’s and the Barrie to Baycrest ride. We are grateful for the unwavering support of our clients and staff and our generous donors, including those who are helping Baycrest transform our physical spaces. Together, we are discovering solutions to the changing needs of an aging society, and paving the way to a better future for older adults, their children and grandchildren.

Message from your Baycrest Chairs

Welcome to your Baycrest Health Sciences’ 2015-16 Annual Report. Throughout the year, we continued our vital work and mission to transform the experience of aging through leading innovations in brain health, wellness promotion and approaches to care that enrich the lives of older adults. We also took a major step forward with the launch of the Canadian Centre for Aging and Brain Health Innovation (CC-ABHI) at Baycrest – a solution accelerator that will improve healthcare outcomes and drive economic growth by fostering collaborations between global innovators and leading seniors care organizations in North America. Laurence Goldstein - Chair, Baycrest Foundation Board of Directors, David Kassie - Chair, Baycrest Board of DirectorsWhile we look toward the future with investments in developing brain health innovations – such as the Virtual Brain and Cogniciti – we remain deeply committed to respecting and maintaining the core of what makes Baycrest unique: the specialized care we provide to patients and their families that cannot be found in any other congregate care setting. In this report, you will read about Baycrest’s excellence in providing care, its donor-funded therapeutic recreation programs that include art and music, and a wide variety of educational initiatives. And of course, our commitment to the founding Jewish principles of tikkun olam (repairing the world) and preserving an environment that respects the needs of our community members. We also celebrate and highlight the achievements of our community members through donor support of the Baycrest Foundation and its successful fundraising events. We encourage you to read through this report to learn more about how your support of Baycrest is helping us remain a world leader in the fields of aging and brain health. Thank you,
