Behavioural Neurology Unit
Program description:
The Behavioural Neurology short-term in-patient unit focuses on assessment and management of adults suffering from brain disorders leading to abnormalities in cognition and behaviour. Common problems include memory loss, speech and language disorders, and agitation.
The interdisciplinary team includes: neurology, geriatric medicine, family medicine, food & nutrition services, neuropsychology, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physiotherapy, speech-language pathology, social work, and therapeutic recreation. Other professionals and services are available on a consultation basis.
Services: (No emergency service is available)
- Neurological assessment, diagnosis, and medication intervention
- Interdisciplinary assessment and intervention
- Behavioural/cognitive management
- Client groups
- Client/Family/Caregiver education
- Individual and family counseling
- Referral and linkage to appropriate services and programs
- Follow-up services, where appropriate.
Admission Criteria:
- Medically stable adults with cognitive and behavioural problems due to brain disease.
- Emphasis is on the assessment and treatment of clients suffering from cognitive dysfunction, associated behavioural disturbances/agitation, amnesia and frontotemporal dementia.
Information Required: Applications available through the Admission Office
- Completed Behavioural Neurology Application.
- Completed current CCAC forms for 'Demographics, Medical, Functional and Behavioural assessments'.
- Letter from the referring physician.
- All relevant consultation data, neurological reports and prior neurological CDs/films.
Referral/Application Process:
- Completed applications are sent directly to the Admission Office for registration.
- The director of behavioural neurology, nursing and social work review applications.
- Approved applicants are admitted when a bed is available.
- If not appropriate for 4 West, other options and suggestions may be discussed.
- Applications are priorized by date of application, bed/unit allocation/availability, and urgency.
Discharge Criteria:
The client/family and interdisciplinary team determine goals jointly. Progress towards achieving the goals is reviewed on a regular basis. Clients are discharged when there is consensus that the goals have been achieved, or that no additional progress would be achieved through continued inpatient treatment.
Discharge Date is Set:
- The client may be discharged back to his/her former residence in the community, or to an appropriate long-term care setting.
- Home Care services are arranged prior to discharge; referrals to services/programs specific to the client's and the family's needs are arranged.
- Clients are referred to the Memory Disorder Clinic (Brain Health Centre Clinics) for follow-up where appropriate.
Fees:
Covered by OHIP.
Clinic referrals, such as Dentistry, etc. are not covered by OHIP.
