Welcome to Baycrest Breakthroughs

There are many inspiring stories at Baycrest. There are stories of exceptional research, clinical and educational triumphs, and many examples of the lives of older adults being enriched. We are pleased to share some of these stories with you in this, the first annual edition of Baycrest Breakthroughs Webzine.

Breakthroughs provides a concise, but compelling look at important health-care issues, ranging from innovative programs for dementia patients, to the effects of medication on our aging population, to memory and the aging process.

As you read through the webzine, you will be moved by the story of the Darras family, who have found a safe haven for their mother suffering from a rare and troubling form of dementia. You will be proud that a bounty of esteemed American brain researchers has flocked to Canada and to Baycrest. And you will find answers to the many questions you have about the proper use of medication, what's normal and what isn't when it comes to memory changes as we age.

Finally, we invite you to find out how Baycrest, a once small and humble home for the aged in downtown Toronto, has evolved into a world-renowned centre for research and clinical practices with a focus on aging and the brain. Most importantly, we welcome you to see how generous sponsors have enabled the Baycrest Foundation to provide Baycrest with the funding it needs to build on its success well into the future - your future and ours.
