Thanks for the Memories!

NHL Heroes and Hockey Buffs ‘Stick it to Alzheimer’s’

He may have recently retired his sweater number, but former NHL great Borje Salming was in top form at this year’s Baycrest International Pro-Am Hockey Tournament. Chosen as the number one draft pick, the Hall of Famer and former Leafs defenceman flew in from Sweden to join Doug Gilmour, Dale Hawerchuk, Wendel Clark and many others for the one-of-a-kind event.

“I never expected my team to do as well as we did,” admits hockey buff Ken Crystal, captain of Team Waterford, the top fundraising team and winner of the first draft pick and championship cup. “People just kept pushing harder and harder to make it happen,” he adds.

The tournament, which took place at York University’s Ice Gardens Arena in March, raised $815,000 for Alzheimer’s research at Baycrest. Each of the 24 participating teams selected one former NHL star to play on their side. Draft positions were determined by the total dollars each team raised through corporate and individual sponsorships.

“It turned out to be an amazing and memorable experience for the whole family with everyone coming out to support the players and meet their favourite hockey heroes,” says tournament director Stan Feldman.

“The Baycrest International Pro-Am has quickly become one of our most highly anticipated events,” says Mark Gryfe, president of the Baycrest Foundation. “We so appreciate the NHL and Maple Leaf Alumni’s involvement in the tournament. Their commitment has created an exciting way to educate and attract a whole new group of supporters in our fight to help people suffering from Alzheimer’s.”

With only four months to go until the 2007 event, Ken Crystal is hard at work building an even stronger team for next year. “It’s only December and I’ve already received more names of players who want to be on my team than there are spots available,” he says.
