A recent background paper published by the Canadian Patient Safety Institute highlights a knowledge gap in our understanding of resident safety in long-term care homes. Emerging research in this setting has focused on the following: how to balance safety and residents’ quality of life; role of nursing leadership in improving safety; reducing the risk of nosocomial infections in the long-term care setting; reducing siderails and physical restraints without compromising risk for falls; implementing best practice guidelines in long-term care; managing difficult and aggressive behaviours; and reducing adverse drug events. At this conference, attendees will be updated on these recent advances of safety improvements in long term care as well as practical applications for long-term care providers to take back to their organizations to implement best practices.
