Infection Prevention and Control

The goal of our infection prevention and control team is to prevent and control infections among our residents by educating residents, families, staff, and volunteers on the principles and techniques of infection control. A mainstay of our infection prevention and control program is reminding visitors to wash their hands when entering and exiting the Apotex Centre, and to use the hand sanitizers located at all of the main entrances.

If a resident has a transmissible infection, our infection prevention and control coordinator will work closely with the care team. In some cases, signs will be posted on residents’ doors to remind everyone about taking certain precautions such as hand washing. Fact sheets about various infections are available from the nursing staff.
If an outbreak of infectious illness occurs – for example, inﬂuenza – families of affected residents will be notiﬁed. You may see special notices posted on your ﬂoor or on the doors of some residents’ rooms. Information will also be posted throughout Baycrest. In such an event, you can stay informed by calling our Family Hot Line at 416-785-2500 ext. 4444 and/or by checking the Family page of the web site at http://www.baycrest.org/.
Flu shots are recommended in the late fall and early winter months for you, your family and also for your private companion, if you have one. Residents receive their ﬂu shots from a Baycrest physician. Visitors may be immunized at our on-site fall ﬂu shot clinic which operates during ﬂu season.
