Volume 1, Fall 2000 - If Not Now e-journal
The theme this quarter is the Second Generation, and it is a pleasure to welcome back previous contributors and introduce new ones. It is gratifying to realise that there are so many of us around the world working on the same issues, and even more interesting to be able to share observations and information. This is the third edition of If Not Now, and the readership continues to grow. The mailing list now has over 500 addresses and consists of agencies and individuals from a wide range of professions and interests.
The Second Generation is noted internationally for its creative contribution, giving artistic alternative expression to the legacy of the Survivors. Shlomo Blumberg discusses the Holocaust Requiem and poetry by Dr. Joseph Albeck and Martin Herskovitz are included. In the introduction to his book, "Songs for the Last Survivor" © Dr. Albeck writes:
"Remembering my parents' lost loved ones, who are memorialized in a very small way on the pages which follow, becomes sweeter with the passing years, as humour and self-acceptance soften the hard edge of loss.Learning to see the beauty, which still remains, and to hear the music behind one's own tears, are challenging tasks for all survivors and their kin. I hope that these poems convey an inkling of the wonder and mystery of the mourning process which can gently, albeit slowly, transmute sorrow into the many joys of renewed life."
These words seem especially appropriate to be highlighted at this time of year, when Jews around the world are preparing for the High Holy Days. May the New Year bring everyone peace, health and the continued commitment to this important work.
