Toronto, ON - Nurses at Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care were honored May 8 by the International Coach Federation (ICF), Toronto Chapter, as a finalist for the Prism Award.

The Prism Award recognizes a company or organization for its commitment to a coaching style of management that moves away from the traditional, hierarchical paradigm to team-based, collaborative decision-making.

"We see this initiative as critical to our vision of developing shared leadership in nursing," says Mary Ferguson-Paré, Vice-President of Nursing Services at Baycrest.

For the past year, Baycrest nurses who hold management positions have been learning coaching and mentoring skills from Goldgrab Leadership Coaching so they can be more effective communicators and team builders with nurses who report to them.

"We are pleased to recognize Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care as a finalist for the inaugural Prism Award," says Adria Trowhill, President of ICF, Toronto Chapter.

"The Prism Award honors organizations that have embraced coaching as a powerful vehicle for bringing about and sustaining cultural change. Baycrest has clearly demonstrated its commitment to coaching as a means for moving forward in its leadership efforts."

"I have been impressed by Baycrest’s tremendous commitment to helping its nurse managers move away from being bosses who use punitive approaches to managing others to being leaders who are willing to be coached and coach others," says Sheila Goldgrab, who nominated Baycrest for the Prism Award. Goldgrab has provided coaching services and coach skills training for Baycrest senior management since 1998.
