Canadian Nurses Association selects Baycrest for 2002 Employer Recognition Award - for CNA Certification Program

Toronto, ON – The Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) has selected Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care as the 2002 winner of the Employer Recognition Award for the CNA Certification Program.

The award recognizes employers and individual champions of the CNA Certification Program. Criteria for selection of winners focus on the financial and other supports the employer places on having certified nurses on staff.

“This is a tremendous honour for Baycrest nurses,” says Joy Richards, Vice President of Nursing Services at Baycrest. “The award celebrates our commitment on two fronts -- providing outstanding geriatric nursing care for our clients, and creating a strong quality of worklife environment that supports the ongoing knowledge development of our nurses, allowing them to mentor others.”

Eight submissions were considered this year by the CNA. Honorable mentions went to the Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation in St. John’s, N.B., and the Sisters of Charity of Ottawa Health Services.

The CNA chose Baycrest for its strong commitment and belief in the certification process. Some of the activities that demonstrate Baycrest’s support for certification include:

  • Financially supporting candidates preparing to write the certification to attend the preparation workshop held at Baycrest Centre;
  • Reimbursing all candidates who obtain certification for the cost of the exam;
  • Publication of successful candidates in the internal newsletter At the Centre;
  • Documentation of successful candidates in the internal publication Professional Achievement Booklet;
  • A celebration held in the Nursing Centre of Excellence at Baycrest during Nursing Week in May to recognize successful candidates of the 2002 Certification Exam;
  • In the coming year, asking for Gerontological Nursing Care (GNC) Certification preferred candidates in nursing job postings.
