TORONTO, October 28, 2008 – Dr. Donald T. Stuss, Vice-President of Research at Baycrest and a world-renowned expert on the frontal lobes, has been selected to receive an Honourary Diploma of Health Science from The Michener Institute of Applied Health Sciences it was announced today. The diploma will be conferred on Nov. 1st.
Michener Honorary Diplomas of Health Science are awarded to outstanding individuals who demonstrate leadership and commitment to the applied health sciences, as well as dedication to health care innovation and the advancement of applied health sciences education.
Dr. Stuss has dedicated 30 years to the study of human frontal lobe function and has made significant contributions to better understanding the human mind. He is the Reva James Leeds Chair in Neuroscience and Research Leadership, and a University of Toronto Professor of Psychology and Medicine (Neurology and Rehabilitation Science). He has published several books, including co-authoring the 1986 classic reference, The Frontal Lobes. He was named the first Director of the Rotman Research Institute (RRI) at Baycrest in 1989, and under his stewardship the RRI has evolved to become a world-class centre for aging brain research. He was recently appointed as the Scientific Director for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Centre for Stroke Recovery. At Baycrest, Dr. Stuss is being honoured for his commitment to applied health care research, scholarship, and academic rigor.
“The decision to recognize Dr. Donald Stuss for this award comes from his many years of contributions to health care innovation,” says Cathy Fooks, Chair, Michener Board of Governors. “Dr. Stuss’ illustrious career in health care and his many research projects and articles, appearing in over 160 journals and chapters, make him an ideal candidate for this honour.”
“It is a significant honor for me to receive this honorary diploma. It is a particular pleasure in that the Michener is celebrating its 50th year of excellence, and I am proud to be part of those celebrations,” said Dr. Stuss.
Past honourees of Michener’s Honorary Diploma of Health Science have included luminaries such as Dr. Amitai Ziv, founder and director of The Israel Centre for Medical Simulation; Dr. Robert Byrick, Clinical Anesthesiologist at St. Michael’s Hospital; Dr. Daniel Klass, Director and Associate Registrar, Quality Management at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario; Dr. Sheela Basrur, Chief Medical Officer of Health and Assistant Deputy Minister of Public Health for Ontario; Dr. David Naylor, President of the University of Toronto; and Dr. Diana Schatz, founder of The Michener Institute for Applied Health Sciences.
