Nursing Structure & Leadership


Two of the largest nursing areas at Baycrest are the Hospital and the Apotex Jewish Home for the Aged. They each operate with different nursing structures and leadership roles depending on the specific units.

Each unit at Baycrest is led by a Nurse Manager and/or Clinical Coach. Depending on the unit, one nurse may be performing the dual role.

The role of the Clinical Coach is to interact with patient care staff and assist them by coaching them through new or challenging situations.

In the Manager domain, these individuals are responsible for recruitment, budgeting and day-to-day operations.

Both the Nurse Manager and Clinical Coach are Masters prepared RNs.

Hospital

The Hospital is comprised of several units with sub-specialties. The largest of these is Complex Continuing Care. In this unit of 170 beds, the leadership consists of five members who function in dual roles as Nurse Manager and Clinical Coach. This role ensures that both the clinical aspect as well as the business aspect of managing a patient care unit receive support and attention.

There are five other specialty units in the hospital which include Rehabilitation, Behavioural Neurology, Psychiatry and Day Hospital, Palliative Care and the Acute Care Unit. In each of these units, there is one person who functions as both the Nurse Manager and Clinical Coach.

The Hospital units are staffed mainly with professional staff comprising of RNs and RPNs.

Apotex Jewish Home for the Aged

Each floor in Apotex, with the exception of A6, has a Nurse Manager and a Unit Clerk. 

A6 has a Nurse Practitioner and Nurse Manager. A Nurse Practitioner is a Masters prepared RN with advanced training and education related to the Nurse Practitioner role.

There are 79 residents per floor.  Each unit is staffed with RNs, RPNs and PSWs.  These staff all  report to the Nurse Manager.  In addition there is access to a social worker, Therapeutic Recreationist and physician on each floor.
