Occupational Therapy at Baycrest

OT at BaycrestPoeple Playing Game

Occupational therapists at Baycrest work with older adults and their families or caregivers through a variety of Baycrest programs.

Depending on the patient's capabilities and interests, occupational therapy (OT) focuses on helping older adults do those activities of daily living that have become difficult or impossible to do because of age-related changes, disorders, or disability.

Our focus is to help our clients and their support networks achieve their occupational goals -- be it physical, cognitive, psychosocial or spiritual.  We also focus on the persons' environment and work to remove barriers and make it as safe and supportive as possible.

When possible, OT enables patients to regain enough function to continue living at home. If institutionalization is necessary, OT can enhance function there.

OT conducts a thorough assessment to assist the individual to identify his or her personal goals, which we use to guide further assessment and treatment.

Occupational therapists may focus on specific interventions depending on the unique needs, abilities and resources of clients and their caregivers. This may include:

  • addressing important and meaningful occupations that have been identified such as self-care, caring of others, community or leisure roles
  • improving comfort, safety or increasing mobility

Where can you find OTs?

We deliver our services to people living in the community, through in-home visits or specific out-patient programs, as well as to people staying on the Baycrest campus for short or long term periods.

Baycrest occupational therapists work collaboratively with clients, families and other professional staff such as physicians, nurses, social workers, psychologists and physiotherapists.
