Geriatric Psychiatry Community Service


What is the Geriatric Psychiatry Community Service?

It is an in-home and outpatient service that provides psychiatry assessment for older people experiencing mental health problems such as depression and memory loss. It also provides treatment and referral for those who do not have access to psychiatric services.

What is the purpose of the Geriatric Psychiatry Community Service?

  • To assess people suffering from mental health problems such as depression and memory loss.
  • To help people cope with feelings such as loneliness and anxiety and situations such as lack of sleep and caregiver stress.
  • To provide support and counselling for the family and other caregivers.
  • To refer the individual and family to community or institutional progams and, if necessary, coordinate their access to other services.
  • To provide education or consultation to individuals, families and professional caregivers about  mental health problems.

Who provides services?

Psychiatrists, nurses, social workers and occupational therapists.

Other professionals are available for consultation if needed.


Who do we help?

Older people suffering from mental health problems, such as depression or memory loss. Their symptoms may include:
  • a depressed mood
  • anxiety or nervousness
  • difficulty making decisions
  • sleep disturbances
  • memory loss
  • confusion
  • personality changes
  • paranoia or excessive suspiciousness
  • disturbing thoughts
  • difficulty managing everyday activities
  • problematic behaviour

Who makes referrals?

Referrals should be coordinated by the family physician.


What is the catchment area that we serve?

We serve the area north of St. Clair Avenue, south of Steeles Avenue, east of Marlee Avenue and west of Avenue Road.
