Education

Professional Development:

The Social Work Profession is committed to ongoing professional development. Baycrest social workers have access to a wealth of in-service education opportunities that avail themselves of internal and external expertise.

The Social Work Department offers the annual Walter Lyons Memorial Lecture that provides a unique educational opportunity that is open to the public. It also hosts an annual Clinic Day, inviting colleagues across the province to participate. The Baycrest Social Work Education Committee, offers monthly lectures and presentations on a range of relevant topics.

Social Work Students:

All universities, as part of the social work degree requirement, require students to complete a field practicum under the supervision of a qualified social worker. The Social Work Student Education Program at Baycrest is well established.

Baycrest social work field instructors supervise students from the University of Toronto, York, Ryerson, Wilfred Laurier and Yeshiva Universities. The Student education program works with these faculties to provide social work placement.

Students are in placement for three or four days depending on how many hours the university requires for placement. Each University offers a forum for field instructors to enrich their teaching skills and discuss student related issues. The education coordinator meets with the field instructors to discuss problems and present ideas to enhance the student education program.

The education coordinator also meets with the students as a group so that they can share their learning. Students have weekly seminar sessions related to clinical skills. This gives other social workers that are unable to be field instructors the opportunity to participate in student learning and contribute to the student education program at Baycrest, by presenting these sessions.

Student Social Workers are accepted and become part of the team in the unit they are assigned to. Baycrest is a teaching facility that gives its social workers the opportunity to contribute to student learning and maintain contact with faculties of social work.

Sharing our knowledge and research:

Baycrest social workers and Katz Centre research scientists are constantly invited to share their expertise at seminars and conferences locally and internationally.
