Young leaders recognized for volunteer service

Colle attended the evening event to bring greetings and gratitude to Baycrest's extraordinary volunteers and to recognize the work of the Volunteer Services department.

Vivien Kim and Venus Sayed have much in common. They are both third-year university students with aspirations to become physicians. They have also been Baycrest olunteers since 2001 and are co-presidents of the Youth Council—a committee of youth volunteers that organizes and runs the Youth Volunteer Program with staff guidance. Both are also the recipients of this year’s William Kagan Youth Achievement Award in recognition of their volunteer contributions to Baycrest.

Kim, who is 20, spent this past summer volunteering as a research assistant in the Brain Health Centre Clinics in addition to her Youth Council duties. Sayed, age 19, also had a busy summer working on contract with Therapeutic Recreation Services as a special events coordinator, working on Youth Council, volunteering on weekends, and going to summer school at night. “We were so surprised to receive this award, but it’s wonderful to be recognized this way,” says Sayed. “Volunteering here has sparked my interest in geriatrics and it’s also a lot of fun.”
