“We have been attempting to reach out to our young Jewish community and get them involved here at Baycrest. Volunteer Coordinator Janis Sternhill and I have been fortunate to strike a positive partnership with CHAT,” Bobbie Cohen Coordinator, Culture and Heritage says excitedly.
The student volunteers, ranging from Grade 9 to 12 are part of a leadership program at their school called WYN – What You Need. With the help of CHAT guidance counselors Jeremy Cohen and Rob Fishbaum, the WYN program enables students to volunteer in the community and to develop their leadership skills.
The very talented students performed a repertoire that appealed to all generations – they played piano and guitar, sang various songs in English, Spanish and Hebrew and danced. Between songs, the students interacted with clients. The students captured the event with video and still photography to attract other students to volunteer at Baycrest.
Janis and Bobbie will soon meet with the school staff and students to evaluate the interaction and plan future involvement. “Hopefully we can engage the students in any number of programs throughout Baycrest. These fresh young faces really raise the level of enjoyment for both the clients and staff. Their presence at future programs would certainly be welcomed by all,” says Bobbie.
We want to thank the youth volunteers for putting in the time and effort into coming to Baycrest and brightening up the lives of all of our clients. Without youth volunteers, many of our therapeutic recreational programs - the ones that enrich the clients' lives - would cease to operate. We are very grateful for our youth volunteers. Youth Volunteers come into the Centre with a smile and their yellow T-shirts. It just makes our day, as well as the clients'.
On behalf of Youth Council (who created the yearbook, adding pictures as the summer went on) and the Volunteer Services Department, THANK YOU to all of our Youth Volunteers for volunteering at Baycrest. We hope to see you next summer - and in next year's yearbook!
