Psychotherapy Groups for Long-Term Care Residents
By Dr. Ken Schwartz, MD, FRCPC
Department of Psychiatry, Baycrest
The manual is designed for mental health professionals working with newly admitted residents to long-term settings such as long-term care homes, assisted living facilities, or retirement homes.
The manual discusses the challenges that physically frail and more cognitively intact individuals (although some may exhibit symptoms of mild cognitive impairment or early dementia) face upon entry into a long-term care setting.
A model of an interactive and integrative group psychotherapy intervention is described. It addresses the mental health and psychosocial needs of the residents within a long-term context.
