A workout for the whole brain
To keep all parts of your brain in shape, you must “challenge it in different ways so you’re using different kinds of brains functions,” notes Baycrest cognitive rehabilitation scientist, Dr. Nicole Anderson.
If you’re only doing crossword puzzles, for example, you’re only working one part of your brain. Here are some exercises for a whole brain workout.
- Solving crossword puzzles requires you to retrieve facts from your verbal memory.
- Planning a dinner party involves problem-solving (planning and organizing).
- Re-arranging a room in your home or finding your way around a new city are examples of using your visual/spatial memory.
“There’s no magic activity,” says Dr. Anderson. “It’s just daily life. Involve yourself in activities that you’re not already an expert at, that are challenging for you, and that you enjoy.”
