About the Artist
Elliot Sylman has been taking photographs since he was 14 and established himself as a professional photographer in 1987. His work focuses on capturing poignant images of people. A child of a Holocaust survivor, he began photographing survivors in 1992, starting with a dramatic portrait of his own father, who was from a small town in Poland.
Over the past 20 years he has made this an integral part of his life’s work. He has since gone on to photograph relatives and friends, taking hundreds of images of survivors across Canada at his own expense. Elliot hopes to create a book with this unique and powerful collection of photos. In addition to his work supporting Baycrest, Elliot has donated his time to Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Centre for Holocaust Studies, Yad Vashem, The Holocaust Centre of Toronto and the United Jewish Appeal. Elliot is married to Stephanie Sylman and has two beautiful daughters, Taylor and Riley.
