Baycrest appoints new Vice-President, Medical Services and Chief of Staff – Dr. Paul R. Katz

Toronto, Ontario, July 19, 2010 — Baycrest, one of the world’s premier academic health sciences centres focused on successful aging and brain health, has appointed Dr. Paul R. Katz as Vice-President of Medical Services and Chief of Staff. He officially starts his new role today.

A preeminent expert in geriatric medicine, geriatric education and nursing home care, as well as a research scientist focusing on medical staff organization and quality, Dr. Katz is recognized across the world as a leader in the long term care field.

He has played, and continues to play, a significant role in advancing geriatric medicine to meet the challenges of today’s patient and resident population that is older and sicker with multiple and complex health conditions.

“Dr. Katz is leading transformative change in the practice of geriatric medicine that will ultimately translate into better care at the bedside for nursing home and hospital clients,” said Baycrest President and CEO Dr. William E. Reichman. “As our new Vice-President of Medical Services and Chief of Staff, he will ensure that Baycrest is at the forefront of new system changes that will improve transitions of care and enhance quality across the health care continuum.”

Prior to joining Baycrest, Dr. Katz was Professor of Medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, and Chief of the Division of Geriatrics and Aging at the school. He was also Medical Director of Monroe Community Hospital (one of the most famous academic nursing homes in the United States), associate Chief of Staff for Research at the Canandaigua U.S. Veterans Administration Hospital, and Director of the Finger Lakes Geriatric Education Centre, sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Health Professions.

“I am truly excited to be joining the Baycrest team and help the organization continue its long tradition of exemplary care to older adults linked to a vision of becoming the very best in the world,” said Dr. Katz, who has accepted the position of Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto.

Earlier this spring, Dr. Katz was appointed President of the prestigious American Medical Directors Association (AMDA) for 2010-2011. He will work with leading experts in the field to formulate best practices that guide healthcare delivery in long term care settings across North America – including at Baycrest.

Dr. Katz is senior editor for the Springer Series Advances in Long Term Care and co-editor of two of the major textbooks in the field: The Practice of Geriatrics and Psychiatry in Long Term Care. He co-edited the latter text with Dr. Reichman, an internationally-known expert in geriatric mental health and dementia.

Baycrest is a world-class developer of innovations in aging that enhance quality of life by optimizing physical and mental well being. A health-sciences centre affiliated with the University of Toronto, Baycrest’s internationally-renowned scientific research and clinical practice is dedicated to transforming the journey of aging.
