That’s The Spirit: Stories of aging well

Kitty Cohen

Kitty Cohen has walked in five fundraisers for Princess Margaret Hospital, raising thousands of dollars.

At 99, Kitty Cohen recently walked an impressive 35 kilometres in support of cancer research.
A resident of the Terraces seniors’ facility at Baycrest, Cohen has earned the distinction of being the oldest participant in the Shoppers Drug Mart Weekend to End Women’s Cancers. This was her fifth time to take part in the two-day walkathon, a fundraiser benefiting Princess Margaret Hospital. She raised $3,000 for the cause.

“I want to do my part in the hope that a cure is found it my lifetime,” she says. “The least I can do is walk.”

Cohen is a firm believer in keeping active and shares her inspirational spirit in speeches to each year’s crowd of participants. She says the secret to living well at 99 is to “keep moving and keep smiling.” She has already signed up for next year’s walkathon when she’ll be 100 years old.
