Message from Dr. Jon Erik Ween, Director, Stroke and Cognition Clinic, Brain Health Centre at Baycrest

When stroke hits, the impact is devastating because our brain is the focal point of who we are as human beings. What people don’t know is that the stroke community is making significant advances in preventing and treating stroke across the board. We’ve identified modifiable risk factors that can prevent as much as 80% of stroke, we have treatments that can minimize and often ‘cure’ A stroke if given at the right time and we are learning more and more about how the brain recognizes and recovers from stroke and how to rehabilitate stroke survivors.

Still, much more work needs to be done for us to be able to reach out and help patients. This is what the Stroke and Cognition Clinic at Baycrest Brain Health Centre is all about: Understanding brain function to maximize ability.

Funds raised at this special tournament will help support Baycrest’s Stroke and Cognition Clinic. This important facility specializes in assessment, diagnostic and rehabilitation services that help stroke patients recover cognitive function and enhance benefits from physical rehabilitation.

Through our Louis and Leah Posluns Centre for Stroke Recovery, Baycrest is a partner in the Heart and Stroke Foundation Centre for Stroke Recovery, a virtual research centre of excellence comprised of three partners: Baycrest, Sunnybrook and Women’s College Health Sciences Centre and the Ottawa Health Research Institute. Baycrest’s role is to use its research strengths to investigate new post-stroke rehabilitation techniques, and apply an array of advanced brain imaging technologies to monitor the progress of patients.
