SOS Educational App for Healthcare: Improved Clinical Reasoning through Simulation & Game-Based Learning.
The SOS Educational App for Healthcare is in its current form a web-based education tool for acute care for the frail and the elderly. There are different versions of the app, with content geared towards personal support workers (PSWs), nurses and allied health professionals. The app has a built-in dashboard to see users’ progress. Content includes simulated cases that prompts the user to pick next steps, examinations, and various other tools. The app is open to being sold/licensed to various types of companies or universities/prep-companies, educating healthcare providers-in-training. Online Memory and Aging Program
The Memory and Aging ProgramTM is geared towards healthy older adults looking to learn more about memory and aging. It features interactive, educational content and acts as an intervention in the form of memory strategies. The sessions are geared to improve functioning during everyday tasks. The sessions also inform participants on lifestyle factors that improve and deteriorate brain health. With support from Baycrest and the Centre for Aging + Brain Health Innovation, the clinicians and researchers behind this successful program have partnered with eLearning experts, software developers, and older adult volunteers to develop an internet-based version of the Memory and Aging ProgramTM. The Online Memory and Aging ProgramTM is designed to be accessed anywhere, at any time, from any internet-connected computer, tablet, or smartphone. Learning the Ropes for MCI
Learning the Ropes for MCI is a programme for older adults experiencing mild cognitive impairment to optimize cognitive health. An emphasis is placed on making healthier lifestyle choices, memory training and psychosocial support. Learning the Ropes is open to caregivers as well. Art on the Brain
ArtontheBrain (AotB) is an online recreation activity that uses visual art as an instrument to promote mental stimulation and socialization. It has three categories of activities: to learn, play and mingle. All activities are based on neuropsychological research and the user interface has been carefully crafted in collaboration with cognitive aging experts as well as end-users. ArtontheBrain has been incubating at Baycrest for several years, has undergone proof of concept and pilot testing, and is currently is being used by various institutions in the United States. Goal Management Training
Goal Management Training® (GMT®) is an interactive program designed to improve the organization of goals and the ability to achieve them for people experiencing executive function impairment. GMT® is structured into nine modules, with interactive discussions designed to raise awareness of various aspects of goal management, tasks that illustrate goal management concepts in action, and homework assignments designed to facilitate the transfer of concepts to real life. GMT® comes as a complete kit, with slides, a trainer's manual, participant workbooks, and all the necessary components to run GMT® sessions in an individual or group setting. Sharing Dance Seniors
Dance is for everyone! Developed by Baycrest and Canada’s National Ballet School (NBS), Sharing Dance Seniors is a safe and accessible dance program that engages older adults in meaningful dance activity that benefits physical, cognitive and overall health. Programming is delivered through the following methods:  

  • In-Person - A range of classes for seniors of varying abilities are available.
  • Video stream - Bring a Sharing Dance Seniors video class to your community via video stream. With the goal of providing the highest quality dance programming for seniors, an instructor from NBS will teach a class via video streaming from the studio in Toronto to a range of settings across Canada including community centres and retirement homes.
  • Teacher Training Program - The Baycrest NBS Sharing Dance Seniors Teacher Training Program is designed for dance teachers who are interested in learning how to offer dance classes to seniors with significant physical and/or cognitive limitation (e.g., people living with dementia).

Words at Your Fingerstips
Words at your Fingertips is a website that addresses word-finding difficulties in healthy aging. The website provides its users with information in word-finding difficulties, and provides various types of exercises where you can practice and test your word finding abilities. Strategies for improvement are also shared. For more information, click here.

Memory Link
Memory Link is intended for adults (20 to 85+ years) with moderate to severe memory problems related to a neurological event or process causing damage to memory structures in the brain. The program offers individual intervention sessions in the use of commercial technologies and software (e.g., smartphones, tablets) geared toward improving day-to-day memory functioning and independence. Other memory strategies may be covered as appropriate. A psychoeducational support group is also available to individuals, as well as a spousal support group for family members. The Virtual Brain
The Virtual Brain (TVB) is a platform that uses imaging data to build a virtual brain model. The platform brings together different types of imaging, neuropsychological and demographic data for clinical and research purposes. The goal is to eventually use the platform to virtually test the effectiveness of various types of therapies and interventions, and potentially become a tool for the delivery of personalized medicine by deciding the course of therapeutics, and providing a prognosis. TorCA
The Toronto Cognitive Assessment (TorCA) is a test designed to detect the early stages of dementia, and has been validated in a population of individuals with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI). The TorCA was developed in Toronto by Toronto Dementia Research Alliance (TDRA) researchers at Baycrest, CAMH, St Michael’s Hospital, Sunnybrook and the UHN. It is an intermediate length (between brief screening tests and full neuropsychological batteries, 30-40 minutes in length), and can be administered by any health professional that has received training. It has been validated and is in use in the Baycrest Memory Clinic. The TorCA assesses the following seven domains: orientation, immediate memory, delayed recall, delayed recognition recall, visuospatial function, executive function, and language function. SOHS
SOHS is a model of care designed to be delivered in long-term care (LTC) and other post-acute care settings, geared towards maintaining and improving oral health. The model is multi-layered including an educational component, where nurses and PSWs are given training on identifying and maintaining oral health in older adults, including older adults with dementia. SOHS also creates a referral pathway to a self-initiated dental hygienist (SIDH) via the LTC electronic medical record, and involves incorporating a SIDH in the inter-professional care team for routine rounds. MMQ
The Multifactorial Memory Questionnaire (MMQ) is a self-report questionnaire for clinicians and researchers to use for assessing metamemory in middle-aged and older adults. Three scales measure satisfaction with memory functioning, self-appraisal of memory ability, and self-reported use of memory strategies. The original validation of the MMQ was published in 2002, demonstrating the reliability and validity of the questionnaire. Normative data are provided for over 100 healthy adults. Since the original publication, the MMQ has been translated into several languages and used in numerous clinical and experimental research studies. To learn more about MMQ, click here.
