Baycrest proudly hosts the scientific headquarters of the Canadian Consortium on Neurodegeneration in Aging (CCNA) — Canada’s premier research network driving innovation in dementia prevention, detection and treatment. Under the leadership of Baycrest Senior Scientist Dr. Howard Chertkow, it unites more than 300 leading researchers and clinicians from across Canada in a coordinated effort to improve the lives of people living with dementia and that of their caregivers.

Recognized as a model for collaborative research, the CCNA plays a pivotal role in shaping the dementia research landscape, advancing the science of brain health and accelerating the development of effective prevention strategies and treatments worldwide.

The CCNA leads two flagship initiatives:

COMPASS-ND: The Comprehensive Assessment of Neurodegeneration and Dementia (COMPASS-ND) study, of which Baycrest is a recruitment site. Researchers involved in the study have recruited 2,000 participants to create the world’s most in-depth study of different forms of dementia.

CAN-THUMBS-UP: The CAN-THUMBS-UP project is the Canadian arm of the worldwide FINGER initiative in dementia prevention. It will recruit people at risk for dementia to take part in multi-domain interventions and in BrainHealthPro, a year-long, interactive, online program for dementia prevention.
