Hearing Services

Hearing Services

Baycrest Hearing Services offers hearing assessments and personalized solutions for hearing loss.

We are open to anyone living at Baycrest and to adults of any age from the wider community.

Our services include:

  • Diagnostic hearing assessments
  • Hearing aid evaluations
  • Hearing aid sales and services
  • Assistive listening device sales and services
  • Counselling and education

We are a not-for-profit clinic, and we work with all hearing aid manufacturers to find clients the best solution for the best price. Proceeds from sales are used to fund ongoing research and education.

Hearing is an important part of brain health and healthy aging. Research shows that hearing loss is linked to a higher risk of dementia, depression, falls and hospitalization.

Online screening test

Our free online screening test can help you or a loved one detect hearing loss.

You will receive your results at the end of the test. If you want to learn more, you can connect with an audiologist for a free 15-minute chat.

The test will take 10 minutes. You will need:

  • An online device like a phone, tablet or computer
  • Headphones (over-the-ear work best)
  • A stable internet connection

Please note that this test is designed to give you general information about your hearing. It is not a diagnostic hearing test or medical assessment.

Learn more

At your first visit to our clinic, you will meet with an audiologist who will ask about your concerns, examine your ear canals and test your hearing.

If you have hearing loss, the audiologist will work with you to find hearing solutions that meet your needs. This will include talking to you about:

  • How hearing aids work
  • The benefits and limitations of hearing aids and communication devices
  • Your specific communication goals and needs
  • Which hearing aids will best meet your needs
  • Which hearing aids will fit your budget
  • If you are eligible for government funding

We will then prescribe the hearing aid or device that’s best for you.

If you decide to order hearing aids from our clinic, we will:

  • Take impressions of your ears, if needed
  • Place your order
  • Schedule a fitting and follow-up appointment

During your fitting, we will make sure you know how to use and care for your hearing aids. We will also make sure they are meeting your needs.

We offer a 60-day trial period, three-year service warranty and two-year loss and damage warranty on all hearing aids.

We may recommend individual hearing rehabilitation, group classes or peer support to learn communication strategies.

We also recommend you return for an annual hearing test and hearing aid check-up to monitor your hearing needs.

Our audiologists offer both individual and group counselling and education to people with hearing loss and their family and caregivers.

Individual counselling

One-on-one hearing rehabilitation with an audiologist can help you find strategies that will help you communicate better. Our sessions include topics like communication strategies, environmental strategies and assertiveness training.

Group classes

Our audiologists run a Hearing Help class for people who are new to hearing aids or who would like a refresher. These group sessions teach clients how to get the most out of their hearing aids. They also teach other strategies for coping with hearing loss that clients can use along with hearing aids.

Cost: Free to all clients who were fitted for hearing aids at our clinic. $40 for four sessions if you purchased your hearing aids somewhere else.

Peer support

We run a Hard of Hearing Club for older adults who are feeling socially isolated because of hearing loss. The group is both social and educational. It gives members a chance to talk about common problems, learn new solutions and make friends. It’s also an opportunity to practice everyday communication strategies.

For more information about counselling or peer support, contact us at 416-785-2500 ext. 2476 or [email protected].

We offer home visits for a fee for clients who cannot visit our clinic. Please phone to learn more.

Why is hearing important to brain health?

Studies have shown that untreated hearing loss is a risk factor for dementia. However, regular screening, using hearing aids and having good communication strategies in place can help with your cognitive health.

Do you do home visits for hearing tests?

Yes, home visits are available for a fee. If you cannot travel to Baycrest, please phone us at 416-785-2500 ext. 2476 to learn more or make an appointment.

Can I try my hearing aids before I buy them?

Yes, we offer a 60-day trial period for hearing aids. You can come back to adjust or return your hearing aids within that trial period.
