The Alzheimer's Association International Conference was recently held in London, UK. Among the research studies reported:
• A study of the brains of former professional soccer players showed lower volumes in regions linked to memory, attention, decision-making, and emotional regulation. The players also reported more symptoms of anxiety and depression and decline in their cognitive function, but objective measures did not show changes in cognitive ability. However, no causal link was identified.
• A study suggests that an oil combining two of the active ingredients in cannabis, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), significantly reduced agitation in people living with dementia, when provided by a physician under controlled conditions.
• A study of a blood test predicted the risk of developing cognitive impairment, as much as ten years later.
• A study in Latin America showed that dementia risk-reducing lifestyle changes translate well into other cultures and countries.
