Baycrest Client Registry

Baycrest Client Registry

You can help shape the future of aging by taking part in Baycrest studies that look at the brain and aging.

Baycrest’s Rotman Research Institute focuses on brain health, wellness and innovative care for older adults. Our success depends on the generosity of volunteers who participate in research studies.

All Baycrest clients and residents are listed in the Baycrest Client Registry. As a client or resident, you may be invited to take part in research studies.

The Baycrest Client Registry is a secure database that stores a small amount of health information. Researchers use it to find people who may be eligible for studies at the Rotman Research Institute, where renowned neuroscientists study how the brain works.

This means that a researcher may contact you to ask if you would like to take part in a study that has been approved by the Baycrest Research Ethics Board.

Taking part in a study may involve:

  • Using a computer to complete memory or attention tasks
  • Using a pencil and paper to complete tasks
  • Having an assessment
  • Fill out a questionnaire
  • Being interviewed
  • Non-invasive brain scans or images

Please note that you do not have to be a Baycrest client to participate in our studies. Learn more about our current research opportunities.

Participation is always your choice. You can opt out of the Client Registry or decline to participate in any research study at any time by calling the research hotline at 416-785-2500 ext. 2900.

In compliance with the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA), all health-care information is kept strictly confidential, secure and protected. The well-being of our clients is our priority, and quality of care will not be impacted in any way by the choice to take part in research or not.

Frequently asked questions

The policy states that, based on their implied consent, all Baycrest clients may be invited to learn about participating in research studies they might be eligible for. This ensures everyone has the chance to take part in research they are eligible for.

Research, care and education are closely connected at Baycrest. This policy supports Baycrest’s goal to transform the aging experience through innovation. By linking research, clinical care and education, we can develop the best treatments and services for clients.

The registry is a secure database with limited information about clients, including:

  • Where care was received (i.e., the Apotex Centre, a hospital unit, the Terraces or an outpatient clinic)
  • Age, gender and diagnosis
  • MDS memory assessment
  • Categories of medication
  • Use of assistive devices like glasses, hearing aids or walker
  • Language preference and abilities

The registry does not include names, health card numbers or ID numbers.

All current Baycrest residents and clients (inpatient and outpatient) are automatically enrolled, based on implied consent. Clients can choose to withdraw that consent at any time.

To have your information removed from the registry, phone the Research Hotline at 416-785-2500 ext. 2900 or email [email protected].

Researchers use the registry to find people who may be eligible for specific approved research studies at Baycrest.

Only Baycrest researchers with studies that have been approved by the Baycrest Research Ethics Board will have access.

If your information matches a study’s requirements, Baycrest will contact you to see if you want to learn more. If you are interested, you’ll receive details about the study so you can decide whether or not to take part.

Being in the registry only means you may be invited to learn about a study. You can say no at any time.

You can withdraw from the registry at any time by:

  • Telling a member of your care team
  • Telling the researcher who contacts you
  • Calling the Research Hotline at 416-785-2500 ext. 2900

For more information about the Baycrest Research Participation Policy, Baycrest Client Registry or a specific study, please call the Research Hotline at 416-785-2500 ext. 2900 or email [email protected].
