The Sam and Ida Ross Memory Clinic helps people who are experiencing memory loss or other cognitive challenges.

Changes in memory and thinking can be part of normal aging. They can also be caused by different medical or emotional problems.

Our clinic team can help figure out if there is a problem and what can help. We see adults of any age who are experiencing:

  • Changes in memory
  • Problems with language
  • Changes in behaviour

This clinic is part of the
Pamela and Paul Austin Centre for Neurology and Behavioural Support.

Learn more

At your first visit, you will meet with a registered nurse who will go over your medical history. The nurse will also give you a test using a pencil and paper to learn more about your thinking skills.

You will then meet with a physician or other health-care professional who will talk to you about your concerns. They will give you a neurological examination and test your strength and coordination.

We will talk to you about what we have learned and answer any questions you may have. If needed, we will refer you to other health-care professionals or recommend further tests to assess your cognitive health.

You may be asked to return for a follow-up visit six to 12 weeks after your first appointment.

At that follow-up visit, you will meet with a registered nurse to talk about how you are doing. The nurse will ask if any new issues have come up.

You will also meet with a physician to go over your test results and talk about possible diagnoses. We will then work with you to create a care plan that might include:

  • More testing
  • Medication to improve certain symptoms
  • Day programs or support groups
  • Other specialized therapies

Depending on your needs, you may be asked to return for more follow-up visits.

  • OHIP card or other health insurance information
  • All medications and supplements in their original bottles
  • A list of questions you want to ask
  • Any medication you might need to take while at the clinic
  • Any aids you use, such as a walker, hearing aids or glasses
  • A friend or family member for support, if you choose

How do I know if my memory changes are normal with aging or something more serious?

Many people notice some forgetfulness as they age. Our team can help determine whether your changes are typical or related to a medical condition that needs treatment or support.

What kinds of tests will I do at my first appointment?

You’ll complete a short pencil-and-paper test to check thinking skills. You will also have a neurological exam that looks at movement, strength and coordination. These tests help us understand what might be causing your symptoms.

Can I bring a family member or caregiver with me?

Yes. Many people find it helpful to bring someone who knows them well. They can offer support, ask questions and help describe changes they’ve noticed.
