Spasticity Management Clinic

Spasticity Management Clinic

The Spasticity Management Clinic is an innovative clinic that assesses and treats older adults experiencing spasticity.

Spasticity describes muscles that are too tight and stiff because they stay contracted for long periods of time. It is a common symptom of a several neurological conditions, including:

  • Stroke
  • Brain injury
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Spinal cord injury

Our clinic team includes neurologists, a physiatrist, nurse specialists, dietitians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, social workers, personal support workers, pharmacists and administrative staff.

We work with clients and their families to help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.

This clinic is part of the
Pamela and Paul Austin Centre for Neurology and Behavioural Support.

I love the intellectual challenge and artistry of identifying which muscles drive involuntary movements and postures, then precisely injecting botulinum toxin to provide relief. It’s deeply satisfying to offer patients such profound benefits quickly through this safe, effective treatment, blending complex clinical skill with meaningful and impactful results.

At your first visit, you will meet with members of our team who will go over your medical history and ask about your symptoms.

A physician will then perform a thorough examination and talk to you about what we have learned. We will work with you and your family to develop a personalized care plan that might include:

  • Medication
  • Treatments like botulinum toxin A (Botox) injections
  • Tests like bloodwork or scans
  • Referrals to other specialists or medical services
  • Follow-up appointments for treatment or to check on how you are doing

Some appointments may be available virtually, but treatments with botulinum toxin A must take place in the clinic.

How do I know if my muscle tightness is spasticity?

Spasticity can feel like your muscles are pulling, stiff or sometimes causing you to move involuntarily. If muscle tightness affects your mobility or ability to do daily tasks, talk to your primary care physician.

How do botulinum toxin A injections help spasticity?

Botulinum toxin A (often known as Botox) injections can reduce pain and improve your comfort and mobility by relaxing the overactive muscles.

What conditions cause spasticity?

Spasticity can be caused by damage to the brain or nervous system from conditions like stroke, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and traumatic brain injuries.
