Dr. Catharine Whiteside
Professor Emerita and Former Dean of Medicine, University of Toronto
A University of Toronto graduate, Dr. Whiteside served as Dean of Medicine and Vice Provost Relations with Health Care Institutions at the University of Toronto, 2006 -2014.
She served as the inaugural Executive Director of Diabetes Action Canada from 2016- 2022 and, subsequently, as Director of Strategic Partnerships and retired March 31, 2025. Diabetes Action Canada is a CIHR-funded Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research national network with over 120 diabetes researchers and 400+ Patient Partners who identify the health concerns of persons living with diabetes and co-create research projects that address these concerns.
From 1985 to 2008 she held the position of Clinician-Scientist in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto engaged in basic science research related to the cellular and molecular mechanisms of kidney disease with particular interest in diabetes.
Dr. Whiteside is a founding member of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS) and former President. The Fellows of the CAHS are recognized as the top-ranked health and biomedical scientists who are brought together to make a positive impact on urgent health concerns of Canadians.
Currently, she serves as a Director on the Board of the Scarborough Health Network and chairs its Research and Education Committee.
Dr. Whiteside was awarded the 2007 Medal for Research Excellence from the Kidney Foundation of Canada for her contributions as a Clinician-Scientist in the Department of Medicine, University of Toronto. In 2009, she received the Canadian Medical Association 2009 May Cohen Award for Women Mentors. She was recognized with WXN Canada’s Most Powerful Women Top 100 Award in 2012. In 2016, she was appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada.
