Complex Continuing Care

Complex Continuing Care

The Inpatient Psychiatry program cares for people with a wide range of mental health challenges.

We offer a short-term in-hospital program that provides assessment and treatment for older adults with diagnosed mental illness, including:

  • Major depression
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Psychotic disorders
  • Mild cognitive impairment with psychiatric symptoms

Our interprofessional team helps patients and their families find solutions they can use at home to manage mental health challenges moving forward.

The goals of our program are to help patients and families:

  • Stabilize mental illness
  • Access more support
  • Gain confidence for daily living
  • Learn to manage mental illness

The exact length of your stay will depend on your individual needs. Most patients can expect to leave the hospital within 60 days.

After you are admitted, you will meet with members of our team who will ask you questions and perform an in-depth assessment.

Together with you and your family, we will decide on a treatment plan that might include:

  • Symptom control
  • Counselling
  • Group therapy
  • Counselling for families
  • Recommendations for social and physical supports

You will need a referral from a physician or nurse practitioner to be admitted. There is a centralized intake process for access to geriatric mental health units at Baycrest, CAMH and Toronto Rehabilitation Institute.

Please fax this referral and take back form (PDF) to 416-506-0439.

The Inpatient Psychiatry program can accept patients who fit the following criteria:

  • Age 65 and older
  • Diagnosed with mental illness (especially mood disorders including major depression and bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders and mild cognitive impairment with associated psychiatric illness)
  • Have confirmed discharge plan and destination prior to admission

We are unable to accept patients with the following needs:

  • Dialysis
  • Mechanical ventilation
  • Bi-level positive airway pressure (BiPAP) machines
  • Cuffed tracheostomy tube
