Exercise is a key part of a healthy, active lifestyle. Studies have shown that even light exercise can benefit your physical, cognitive, and overall health.
However, the type of exercise our body requires changes as we get older. That’s why Baycrest has partnered with Canada’s National Ballet School (NBS) to develop Sharing Dance Seniors; a safe, accessible, and inclusive dance program that provides older adults with the opportunity to engage in meaningful and enjoyable exercise.

Dance has many benefits, especially in older adulthood. These include greater endurance and balance, which result in a reduced risk of falls and are associated with better cardiovascular and muscle health. Sharing Dance Seniors is also a great opportunity to meet peers, make new friends, and reduce feelings of isolation while encouraging the growth of community around a shared interest.

The dance classes are accessible to individuals of varying skill levels and abilities. Baycrest and NBS have purpose-built classes that cater to individuals with reduced mobility, cognitive limitations (e.g. Parkinson’s Disease, dementia, etc.), or any older adult looking for a fun and innovative way to exercise! Anyone interested is encouraged to join.

Take it from Dorothy “Dot” Gordon, one of the many program participants over 90 years of age:
“You don’t have to have any dance experience. As long as you want to move to music, everyone is welcome.”
Sharing Dance Seniors is available a number of ways. You can participate in one of the many in-person classes or bring the dance class live to your community through a high-quality video streaming service.

Are you a dance teacher interested in providing Sharing Dance Seniors classes in your community? Consider the Teacher Training Program, available online or in-person.

Dance is for everyone, no matter your level of ability. For more information about the program and how to sign up, please visit our website or contact innovation@baycrest.org for details.
