About the Planning Your Best Life Workshop Series

This series is designed for people who want to learn how to proactively map out their aging plans and make transitions on their own terms. Workshop participants will be actively involved in applying a “travel planning approach” to tailor their choices to their own circumstances based on their preferences, values and unique risks or considerations.

Through presentations, self-reflection tools, resource materials and facilitated group conversations, participants will engage in a real-life problem-solving process, including exploring ideas, sharing lived experiences and discussing innovative solutions. Participants will be encouraged to think about their future and have fun exploring new ideas and options.

  • Session 1: Maintaining Your Best Health and Well-being
    About This Session
    In the first of this five-part workshop series, learn how everyday lifestyle choices and being proactive can contribute to maintaining health and well-being. Among the many strategies covered, we’ll discuss the importance of seeking out the right healthcare advice and establishing collaborative relationships with primary care clinicians and specialist health providers. The session will also highlight the benefits of learning how technology can be used for managing and monitoring your health, receiving virtual care, communicating with clinicians, organizing health records, booking appointments and scheduling services.

  • Session 2: Making Timely and Wise Housing Choices
    About This Session
    Learn about the importance of situating yourself in the right “place” to age successfully and belonging to a community. Find out how to make wise, timely and informed housing decisions to allow you to safely stay in the places you choose with the proper supports. We’ll discuss ownership vs. renting housing options, and showcase examples of emerging and creative housing solutions.

  • Session 3: Building and Maintaining Social Networks and Connections
    About This Session
    In this session, discover how social connections contribute to our health, well-being and personal safety. We will discuss various intentional strategies and actions – including using digital technologies – to support forming, maintaining and deepening social connections. We will also explore unique initiatives that help people shift how they engage with their neighbours or community members, such as the Hey Neighbour Collective, Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NORC)-Based Models, Aging Together as Community and Compassionate Communities.

  • Session 4: Selecting, Organizing and Preparing a Caregiving Team
    About This Session
    Join us to learn about the importance of forming a “circle of support” or a “caregiving team” for yourself in later life. We will examine the key roles on your team, factors to consider when selecting trusted people (e.g. a mix of unpaid and paid help), technology solutions to ensure an effective team of caregivers, and resources to help you prepare your team members. We will also provide information on future care options that offer increased levels of support, such as care within your home or in a more supportive residential care setting.

  • Session 5: Guide to Estate Planning
    About This Session
    In our final session of this series, learn about the most resourceful ways to get the best from your health, housing, social connections and caregiving circle or team. We’ll combine the key themes from the previous four workshops to help you see a wider range of resources enabling your best later life. Discover various options for saving time, money and effort through technology and practical use of insurance plans, government funding and tax incentives or credits. Be empowered to leverage a broader set of resources to proactively make transitions in your own way.

Sue Lantz, BA, MPA

Sue Lantz, Founder and Managing Director of Collaborative Aging, is an expert on healthy aging and caregiving within the community. Her organization offers educational and navigational resources that inspire, inform, and prepare individuals and communities as they envision successful aging with choices and the right support.

In 2020 Sue released the user-friendly workbook called Options Open: The Guide for Mapping Your Best Aging Journey©.  This annually updated guide helps readers explore and plan within five interrelated areas of life: health, home, social connections, caregiving team and resources.  This framework is a way to consider strategies and take a resourceful approach to later life transitions.
