About the Geriatric Depression Scale

The Geriatric Depression Scale has been used and tested extensively with the older population. The validity and reliability of this tool is supported through both clinical practice and research.

It is not a substitute for a diagnostic interview by mental health professionals however it is a useful screening tool in the clinical setting to facilitate assessment of depression in older adults especially when baseline measurements are compared to subsequent scores.

Older adults who are physically ill or have mild to moderate dementia or who may have short attention span and/or feel easily fatigued may find the Short Form easier to complete.
The survey typically takes 5 to 7 minutes to complete.
